Rummy Game Rules – How to Play Rummy Online
Rummy is India's most popular skill-based card game. The goal is to arrange all your cards into valid sequences and sets before your opponents and declare. This guide covers the complete rules, card combinations, how to declare, scoring, and winning tips for playing Rummy on IS7 Game.
What is Rummy?
Rummy (specifically Points Rummy, the most common online format) is played with 2 standard 52-card decks plus 2 Jokers (104 cards total). Each player is dealt 13 cards. The goal is to form valid combinations — sequences and sets — using all 13 cards, then declare before other players do. It is a game of skill, strategy, and memory.
Rummy Card Combinations
You must form combinations using all 13 cards. There are three types:
3 or more consecutive cards of the SAME suit, WITHOUT a Joker. Example: 4♥ 5♥ 6♥. You MUST have at least one Pure Sequence to declare.
3 or more consecutive cards where a Joker replaces one card. Example: 4♥ Joker 6♥ (Joker acts as 5♥).
3 or 4 cards of the SAME rank from DIFFERENT suits. Example: 7♠ 7♦ 7♣. A Joker can replace one card in a set.
How to Play Rummy – Step by Step
Each player receives 13 cards. The remaining cards form a face-down draw pile (stock). One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile.
Arrange your 13 cards into potential sequences and sets. Most online Rummy apps (including IS7 Game) have a Sort button to help organise your hand automatically.
On your turn, draw one card — either from the top of the face-down stock pile, or from the top of the face-up discard pile.
After drawing, you must discard one unwanted card to the discard pile face-up. You now have 13 cards in hand again.
Keep drawing and discarding each turn, working toward a hand with: at least 1 Pure Sequence + at least 1 more sequence or set, using all 13 cards.
When all 13 cards are arranged into valid combinations, draw one final card, discard one to the Finish slot, and declare. The other players' unmatched cards score penalty points against them.
Rummy Scoring & Points
| Card | Point Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 10 points | High-value card |
| King (K) | 10 points | High-value card |
| Queen (Q) | 10 points | High-value card |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | High-value card |
| Number cards (2–10) | Face value | e.g. 5♠ = 5 points |
| Joker | 0 points | No penalty if caught unmatched |
Maximum penalty = 80 points per hand. Unmatched cards in losing players' hands are totalled. The winner scores 0. In Points Rummy, the winner earns (sum of opponents' points × point value) as their prize.
Rummy Joker Rules
- 🃏 Two types of Joker exist: Printed Joker (the dedicated joker card) and Wild Joker (a randomly selected card at game start, e.g. 5♥).
- 🃏 Both the Printed Joker and all cards of the Wild Joker's rank (regardless of suit) act as Jokers in that game.
- 🃏 Jokers can substitute any card in an Impure Sequence or Set, but CANNOT be used in a Pure Sequence.
- 🃏 If the Wild Joker drawn happens to be an Ace, then all Aces in the deck serve as Jokers for that game.
- 🃏 A Joker in hand = 0 penalty points if you lose.
Rummy Winning Tips
- 🎯 Always focus on forming your Pure Sequence first — without it, you cannot declare no matter how good your other combinations are.
- 🃏 Use Jokers wisely — save them for high-value cards (Ace, King, Queen, Jack) to complete sequences faster.
- 👁️ Watch the discard pile — if an opponent picks a card you discarded, they may be building a sequence with that suit or rank. Avoid discarding similar cards.
- 🚫 Discard high-value cards early if they have no sequence potential — they carry a 10-point penalty if you lose while holding them.
- 📊 Memorise which cards have been picked from the discard pile. This tells you what cards opponents are collecting.
- ⚡ If your hand is very weak (high unmatched points, no sequence possible), consider dropping early to limit your penalty points.
